Remarkable book
I can't believe there have been no other reviews. This is an incredible historical document, an almost daily account of San Francisco's history from Sir Francis Drake until 1854. Rich with details I had never heard of. Some may find the inherently racist viewpoint appalling, but for the times it's comparatively objective. The authors display some cognitive dissonance, especially in their view of the Chinese, who are on one page degenerate and filthy, and on another hard working, respectable and a credit to the city. Meanwhile, high level corruption and incompetence in civic government are openly discussed. Read this book for entertainment!
